Tension headaches are the most common form of headache, often presenting with dull, aching pain or feeling of general tightness in the shoulder, neck or head. Typically, the pain ranges from mild to moderate, yet, in rare cases the pain can be noted as intense and prolonged. These bouts can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several days. Tension headaches are often triggered by fatigue, stress, poor posture, muscle tension, anxiety and activities of daily living.
Symptoms may include:
- Dull, tightness or pressure around the eyes, ears, scalp and neck (vice like)
- Tenderness in the muscles around the scalp, neck and shoulders
- Sensitivities to light or noise
- Muscle aches
- Trouble focusing
- Fatigue and malaise
- Onset is typically later in the day
While the exact cause isn’t always clear, tension headaches are thought to result from muscular trigger points, muscular contractors and general stress.
Treatment Options include:
- Massage therapy
- Acupuncture or dry needling
- IMS (Intramuscular Stimulation)
- Chiropractic adjustments
- Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen
- Stress Management seminars
- Regular exercise
- Stretching
- Postural re-education
- Self massage
- Hot towel or bath targeting affected muscles
When choosing a treatment option, understand that not all tension headaches present the same. Typically, massage therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic adjustments or physiotherapy are recommended for effective relief. It’s important to consult a healthcare professional to determine the most appropriate treatment plan. Many patients have found that a combination of these modalities have been beneficial to reducing both the frequency and severity of the headaches.
Massage Therapy
Typically massage is recommended to reduce sympathetic nervous system firing (Fight or Flight), pain, hypertonicity, trigger points and joint dysfunction. While aiming to increase tissue pliability and increase range of motion. This is done through manual manipulation and release of taught muscles and trigger points in the shoulder, neck and scalp.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture aims to restore balance, improve circulation and promote the body’s natural healing mechanism. The use of thin, sterile needles into specific points of the body to stimulate blood flow and easy muscle tension can be used for treatment of tension headaches.
Chiropractor
Chiropractors can help manage and treat tension headaches through several different techniques, primarily focusing on the spine and musculoskeletal system. These may include, spinal manipulation, soft tissue release, postural corrections, stretching and strengthening exercises, and lifestyle/ergonomic advice.
Note: Chronic tension headaches or a sudden onset of intense pain in the head may require more specialized treatment.
